Descripción

Bilingual education is challenging for teachers and students alike. Children face the double challenge of learning new concepts while doing so in a foreign language. On the other hand, most teachers have not experienced bilingual education as students and demand more training to acquire the necessary tools to assist their pupils through their learning process in the bilingual classroom. This new situation has also led to changes in the EFL classroom in turn, where students are in need of a meaningful approach to English, which will prepare them for the content subjects they study, such as Natural or Social Sciences from a CLIL perspective.

Taking into account this new situation in our educational system, the teachers of the future should get ready to teach effectively within a bilingual setting. They key behind this purpose is scaffolding (i.e. the assistance that the students will receive to be able to fulfil the activities in the different subjects successfully).

The aim of this course is to provide students of the Infant and Primary Teacher Training degrees with the necessary tools in terms of scaffolding strategies to assist their pupils in bilingual education settings.

This course will also be useful for students to practise and develop their communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as their English in general. Finally, the course will also help students to design their own study techniques when facing subjects taught in English at university.

METHODOLOGY

This is mainly a face to face course. Course time will be devoted to participants’ discussions/debates and problem solving on the topics dealt with, practical activities where students will see different scaffolding strategies in action, and occasional brief theoretical presentations of the key concepts. Activities will be student-centred and based on cooperative and collaborative learning.
