Spanish Influencers in Science IX Edition: Antibiotic resistanceLa resistencia a los antibióticos es uno de los desafíos sanitarios más urgentes de nuestro tiempo. A medida que las bacterias se vuelven cada vez más resistentes a los tratamientos médicos, la investigación y la innovación en este campo son esenciales para proteger la salud global y evitar una era post-antibiótica.

La serie Spanish Influencers in Science, organizada por la Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Bélgica (CEBE) y con el apoyo de la Embajada de España en Bélgica, la Fundación Ramón Areces y el Instituto Cervantes, regresa con su novena edición el 18 de septiembre de 2025 a las 18:30, en el Instituto Cervantes de Bruselas. Este año, el evento explorará el fascinante mundo de la resistencia a los antibióticos a través de dos charlas divulgativas de 20 minutos en inglés, seguidas de una conversación abierta con el público.

Por un lado, contaremos con la participación de la Prof. Carmen Torres, reconocida experta en microbiología clínica y resistencia antimicrobiana. Doctora en Farmacia y especialista en Microbiología Clínica (FIR) por Madrid, actualmente es Profesora de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular en la Universidad de La Rioja y coordina el grupo de investigación OneHealth-R. Su trabajo se centra en la resistencia a los antimicrobianos desde las perspectivas One Health y Global Health, abordando la interconexión entre humanos, animales, alimentos y medio ambiente. Ha publicado ampliamente sobre epidemiología molecular de bacterias y plásmidos resistentes, el papel de la microbiota y el desarrollo de péptidos antimicrobianos. Su equipo ha recibido diversos reconocimientos, como el Premio PRAN 2022 a la mejor iniciativa medioambiental contra la resistencia a los antibióticos.

Por otro lado, escucharemos al Prof. Rob Lavigne, profesor y director del Laboratorio de Tecnología Genética de la KU Leuven. Pionero en la investigación de bacteriófagos, su laboratorio ha liderado avances como el desarrollo de las Artilisinas™, enzimas capaces de eliminar bacterias Gram-negativas resistentes. Su trabajo combina biología de sistemas, secuenciación de ARN y metabolómica para entender la interacción entre fagos y bacterias, especialmente en Pseudomonas aeruginosa. El Prof. Lavigne tiene un perfil internacional destacado: es presidente de la Sociedad Internacional de Virus de Microorganismos y fue presidente del comité de taxonomía de virus bacterianos del ICTV. Además, es cofundador de la organización sin ánimo de lucro P.H.A.G.E., dedicada a promover el desarrollo regulatorio de la terapia con fagos.

Spanish Influencers in Science IX Edition: Antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. As bacteria increasingly become resistant to treatment, research and innovation in this field are essential to protect global health and prevent a post-antibiotic era.

The Spanish Influencers in Science series, organized by the Association of Spanish Scientists in Belgium (CEBE) and supported by the Spanish Embassy in Belgium, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and the Cervantes Institute, returns for its ninth edition on September 18th, 2024, at 18:30, at the Cervantes Institute in Brussels. This year, the event will explore the fascinating world of antibiotic resistance through two engaging 20-minute talks in English, followed by an open conversation with the audience.

On one hand, we will welcome Prof. Carmen Torres, a renowned expert in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial resistance. With a PhD in Pharmacy and specialization in Clinical Microbiology from Madrid, Prof. Torres is currently Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of La Rioja and leads the OneHealth-R research group. Her work focuses on antimicrobial resistance from a One Health and Global Health perspective—studying the interconnected roles of humans, animals, food, and the environment. She has published extensively on the molecular epidemiology of resistant bacteria and plasmids, the role of microbiota, and the development of antimicrobial peptides. Her team’s contributions have earned national and international recognition, including the 2022 PRAN Award for the best environmental initiative against antimicrobial resistance.

On the other hand, we will hear from Prof. Rob Lavigne, professor and head of the Laboratory of Gene Technology at KU Leuven. A pioneer in bacteriophage research, his lab has led breakthroughs such as the development of Artilysins™, enzyme-based agents capable of killing resistant Gram-negative bacteria. His work combines systems biology, RNA sequencing, and metabolomics to understand phage-bacteria interactions, particularly in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Prof. Lavigne has an active international profile, serving as president of the International Society for Viruses of Microorganisms and former chair of the bacterial virus taxonomy committee at ICTV. He is also co-founder of the non-profit P.H.A.G.E., which advocates for regulatory advancement in phage therapy.
