Mahjong Monkey

Ileana Couret-Endom is an instructor who teaches both American mahjong using National Mah Jongg League rules as well as a Hong Kong version. She has also developed helpful methods for players who struggle with the complexities of the game. Ileana believes that mahjong will become more than just a game, but a catalyst for building community. Those who persevere will not only develop skills like critical thinking and social intelligence, but they will also develop lasting friendships over the years.

Ileana has been playing mahjong since 2017 after she read Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. She has been teaching the American version monthly since 2024 in The Woodlands, Texas, and hosts open play in the community. She holds an undergraduate degree in marketing and a master’s in information technology management from the University of Tampa in Florida.

When Ileana is not teaching the game, she enjoys volunteering in her community, traveling, and spending time with her husband, Frank, over a great meal.
