Situada en el sudeste del océano Pacífico, la isla de Pascua (Parque Nacional Rapa Nui), que pertenece legalmente a Chile, es uno de los territorios habitados más aislados del mundo. Fue incluida en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en 1995, principalmente gracias a los incomparables vestigios de la cultura local, las estatuas moai, que despertaron un gran interés en todo el mundo durante el siglo XIX y, sobre todo, durante el siglo XX. Las enormes estatuas de piedra fueron talladas por los indígenas entre los años 1100 y 1680 d. C., y hay unas 9000 en la isla. Muchos científicos han investigado aquí y se han escrito bibliotecas enteras sobre los diferentes aspectos de la historia de la isla. A Csendes-óceán dél-keleti részén található, jogilag Chiléhez tartozó Húsvét-sziget (Rapa Nui Nemzeti Park), amely a világ egyik legizoláltabb lakott területe, 1995-ben került fel az UNESCO világörökség listájára, elsősorban a helyi kultúra páratlan emlékeinek, a moai szobroknak köszönhetően, amelyek a XIX. és főleg a XX. század során világszerte nagy érdeklődést váltottak ki. A hatalmas kőszobrokat az őslakosok faragták ki i.sz. 1100 és 1680 között, és kb. 9000 található belőlük a szigeten. Sok tudós vizsgálódott itt és könyvtárnyi tudományos irodalom dolgozta fel a sziget történetének különböző aspektusait.
