DATACTIVE: Final Event

DATACTIVE

Join us June 29th for the DATACTIVE final event to celebrate six years of data activist research!

We’re nearing the end of DATACTIVE and we have many accomplishments to celebrate! For almost six years now, we've worked together to study the complex and multifaceted field of data activist practices through numerous interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and even by developing our own open-source tools for research. We've had a wonderful time bringing together academics, artists and practitioners from around the world to do quite a few interesting things: We created tools to shed more light on the workings of the algorithms that power big platforms, and located how human rights considerations painstakingly make their way to the infrastructure of the internet. We also wrote about the various ways publics engage with modern regimes of surveillance and how notions of risk articulate strategies to resist it. We traced the evolution of a global network of data activists and tried to figure out how institutions are reacting to their mobilization. During this last year of crisis, we also set out to question the politics of counting in the first pandemic in a datafied society.Throughout these years, the 'we' of DATACTIVE has been neither static nor stable. DATACTIVE has been a home to no less than 26 people in the core team, plus many other research associates, interns, and collaborators, who enriched us with their expertise. Though the project is coming to an end, we are well aware the work is not done. In the meantime, please join us June 29th for the DATACTIVE final event to celebrate, looking back, and a moment to ponder on the future. We have Stefania Milan reflecting on six years data activism, Becky Kazansky shedding some light on treat modelling and resistance to surveillance, Guillen Torres presenting his work on institutional resistance, and Niels ten Oever taking us through the politics of infrastructure. Fishbowl guest speakers include Maxigas, Fieke Jansen (Data Justice), Claudio (Algorithms Exposed) Svitlana Matviyenko (digital democracies institute).See you soon!
