THE OLYMPIC GAMES OF BARCELONA’92 . AN URBAN RENEWAL EXPERIENCE.
Barcelona experienced a great urban transformation due to the Olympic Games
More than 40 km from the metropolis of Barcelona were opened to the sea and the most important
change occurred in the city centre where the inhabitants could only reach the sea by walking all the
way down to the bottom of the cosmopolitan Rambla.
Due to the newly built facilities and the designing of quality public spaces, Barcelona became a great
world reference and received prestigious awards granted by RIBA and Harvard University. The most
important new infrastructure, Las Rondas, surrounded the city and made it possible to connect the
four Olympic areas in less than 15 minutes:
1. The Mountain of Montjuïc with the Olympic Ring.
2. The Olympic Village located in front of the sea.
3. The Olympic facilities of the Vall d'Hebron and the City of Journalists.
4. The Diagonal Olympic Area.
It is important to mention that everything that was designed for the Olympic Games was thought out
for the future and was used to improve the quality of life with improvements in transportation, new
services, facilities and public spaces in the city.
The urban regeneration of Barcelona has continued until today, with exemplary urban transformations.
such as that of the District 22 @ or the aims for improvement in sustainability and mobility. For this
reason Barcelona is currently an important world reference.
