Encuentro-coloquio (en inglés) con JOCELYN BELL (UCL) y conferencia impartida por Mark Kidger (ESA) (en inglés) que tendrá lugar en la Sala de Proyección del Planetario de Madrid a las 19h.

La Dra. Susan Jocelyn Bell, astrofísica norirlandesa descubridora en 1967 del primer púlsar, estrella de neutrones en rápida rotación, compartirá escenario con el Dr. Mark Kidger de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA), quien impartirá una charla sobre este importante descubrimiento y su influencia en las teorías de la evolución estelar.

El encuentro vendrá precedido de la proyección en inglés de la película fulldome “Life’s question”.

El encuentro tendrá lugar el martes 19 de octubre a las 19h* (hop) y se podrá seguir de manera presencial reservando desde este sitio, o bien en streaming desde nuestro Canal YouTube Planetario de Madrid

Betelgeuse, supernovae and pulsars: death among the stars as foundation for life

It is often said that we are stardust. Few people realise though just how true this is. Similarly, in the same way that obesity and heart disease are human problems, stars suffer from them too. In fact, a major cause of death among the stars, like in humans, is heart disease caused by being overweight. However, it is in the violent death of these overweight stars that life is brought to the Universe, as almost all the elements in our bodies - the iron in our blood, the calcium and phosphorous in our bones and teeth, the oxygen that we breathe, the carbon and nitrogen that form the base of proteins - all formed in massive stars and came to seed our planet Earth after their death. We exist thanks to their violent deaths as supernovae, filling space with the heavy elements that have formed in their interior, leaving the tiny, mysterious remnants that were discovered by Jocelyn Bell, called neutron stars, which she detected beaming radio waves as pulsars. Were it not for the noble sacrifice of these stars, life and, indeed, our Earth itself would be impossible.
