Acerca de este evento
Practice your English and put your critical thinking skills into action as we debate this TED Talk.
The TED Talk we will debate is called "A funny look at the unintended consequences of technology. As the name suggests, it takes a humorous look at some of the issues we are faced with today.
Some of the questions we will explore include:
- Has social media actually made us less social?
- What impact is Artificial Intelligence going to have on us and our society?
- Is it going to take 🫵 job?!
You can see a more detailed overview in this "explainer" video, which includes some clips fro the TED Talk.

FAQs
What is Watch and Talk about TED?
It’s an informal social event where you can practise your English speaking skills by sharing your own thoughts and opinions about a TED Talk.
Is it for me?
If you are ready to express your thoughts with clarity (but not, necessarily, perfection!), yes! These debates are suitable for “strong intermediate” (B2) and above.
I’m a native English speaker - can I come too?
Sure! The more the merrier! It’s a great way to meet new people.
How much is it?
It’s free but feel free to buy us a beer! 😉
Heads Up!
This is not an official TED(x) Talk! We are an in-company language school and we simply want to create events where you can practise your English, meet new people and share your passion for TED Talks with interesting and stimulating conversations.
Sounds interesting! What is the format of the event?
Good question! First of all, we warm up by sharing some general opinions on the topic (keep reading for that!).
After that, we watch the video together, clip by clip, and summarise the main points.
Now for the best part…
We consider the topic from various points of view including “local” and personal and ‘get the knives out’ with some critical thinking!
And finally, we reflect on the language used in the videos to help boost your vocabulary.
Should I watch the video before the event?
You “can” watch the video before the debate, perhaps to sort out your ideas and sharpen your arguments, but some would say it is more interesting to discover the topic together and not watch the video beforehand, but it is a personal choice.
Will there be subtitles?
Yes! Unlike in our language training, we watch the video with subtitles so that we can focus on the topic and not sweat too much!
What is the topic of TED Talk?
The title of the video is “A funny look at the unintended consequences of technology". It takes a light-hearted look at three main topics:
- The impact of social media - is it taking over our lives?
- Artificial Intelligence - are we all going to lose our jobs?!
- Bioengineering - are “designer babies” coming soon?
Sounds good but I can’t make it.
Don’t worry, this is going to be a regular thing so see you next time! Keep an eye out on Linkedin or check out our webpage:
