Generating radically new ideas based on excellent science and being able to materialize them with real benefits for society is a tremendous challenge. It not only relies on capable and inspiring researchers, but on the synergy of other factors of a very different nature: social perception, economic/political context, gender/ethics issues, or matching with real social needs. Early detection of these types of ideas and resource facilitation is key to enable the kick-off of promising future technologies. The EU has developed several programs for giving financial support to these technologies, although competition is fierce, and a considerable proportion of proposals submitted do not reach the quality threshold.
