From Crate to Beat is an immersive 2-hour workshop dedicated to the foundations of hip-hop beatmaking through sampling, led by DJ KODH — DMC World Champion, producer, beatmaker, and DJ for some of the most respected figures in French hip-hop.

The workshop begins with the art of digging: how to approach vinyl records, what to listen for, how to identify textures, grooves, and musical moments that can be transformed into something new. Participants will explore the importance of musical knowledge, curiosity, and respect for past music, which are central values of hip-hop culture.

From there, DJ KODH will guide students through the selection of a vinyl record, the extraction of a sample, and the transformation of that sample into the foundation of a new instrumental. Step by step, participants will discover how a raw musical fragment becomes the backbone of a beat.

The session then moves into beat construction and composition: structuring drums, building rhythm, creating movement, and giving identity to an instrumental. DJ KODH will also introduce a light approach to mixing, explaining key concepts to make a beat sound balanced and coherent, without overcomplicating the process.

Beyond technique, this workshop focuses on creative mindset and cultural transmission. It offers a rare opportunity to understand how original hip-hop music is built, not through presets or shortcuts, but through listening, intention, and craftsmanship.

Designed for a maximum of 10 students, the workshop encourages interaction, questions, and close observation of a professional at work. The class will be conducted in English and is open to producers, DJs, beatmakers, and music enthusiasts who want to deepen their understanding of sampling-based hip-hop production.
