Kindness in Research is a free 1-day conference at King's College London on the topic of trauma-informed research practice.

This is the 2nd Edition of KiR after the succesful 2022 event. KiR is organised by early career researchers and is funded by the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) through its Student-Led Activity fund. This year's conference has two key themes:1. Institutional barriers to conduct trauma informed research. Trauma-informed research places equal importance on researcher and participant well-being. We will explore the barriers preventing meaningful survivor involvement (e.g., lack of support networks, etc.) 2. Preventing and managing vicarious trauma. Research in this field can also lead to VT. We will emphasise the need to address VT and resources to identify, prevent and manage VT. About trauma-informed approaches:Experiences of trauma, violence and abuse are extremely common worldwide. Trauma-informed approaches recognise the impact of trauma on individuals and empower participants rather than take power awayIn trauma-informed research we also acknowledge that anyone can be affected by trauma – including academics, clinicians, and PhD students – and that this is not an inherent sign of vulnerability or weakness but can often be a source of connection, empathy and kindness, leading to better data and more ethical research.So, join us for a discussion on trauma-informed approaches to research and methods. We will bring together a group of researchers and survivor-researchers who have addressed this topic in their work. We will have a mixture of talks, panel discussions and practical workshops. Attendees will leave with a toolkit that they can apply to their own research practice.The conference will run between 9:45am – 8pm. Catering will be provided for lunch and reception.Programme:9:45 – 10:15 Tea, coffee and biscuits in BH (S) 4.0310:15 – 10:30 Introduction and Welcome 10:30 – 11:30 Session I: Workshop by Jane Chevous "From Users and Choosers to Makers and Shakers” 1, the why, what and how of survivor research involvement: Workshop by Jane Chevous, Survivors Voices.Why is it important to involve survivors well in research?What do we mean by meaningful involvement?How can we overcome any barriers, to do it well?We’ll draw on Survivors Voices work developing and evaluating a survivor research toolkit, and it’s use in our and others’ research projects. We’ll use this to explore involving survivors in making research meaningful and shaking up trauma-informed research practice.1 Cornwall &amp; Gaventa, 200011:30 – 11:45 Comfort break 11:45 – 12:45 Session II: Workshop by Dr. Susanna Alyce Self Care: today and in future, wellbeing and Trauma-Informed Awareness Toolkit Trauma is tricky; researching it can bring us close to our own edges, or hand us vicarious trauma. In this workshop we will think together about how to recognise your personal trauma and trigger signature, what 'holding' and defusing interventions and actions work for you and use the shared group knowledge to make a map for our own use in our work and lives. We will also explore more immediate skills to find steady ground when shaken. The space will be held by Susanna, a trauma survivor who works with counselling, mindfulness and yoga with clients and uses these skills in her work as a researcher. She recently completed her PhD with survivors of child sexual abuse. 12:45 – 13:45 Lunch in BH (S) 4.03 (vegan and gf options available)13:45 – 14:45 Session III: Talk by Siofra Peeren Reflections on a PhD using a trauma-informed approach in research with survivors of trauma, violence and abuseIn this talk, I will discuss some key challenges and achievements of completing my PhD research, which explored sexual violence survivors' experiences of pregnancy, birth, motherhood and maternity care. In this research, I used my own identity as a survivor to guide ethical and methodological decisions, and I worked collaboratively with survivor mothers and a survivor-led organisation to produce my findings. I will reflect on some of the challenges and benefits of the approach that I took, as well as discussing the often-untapped potential of research to bear witness to experiences of violence, abuse and trauma. P﻿oetry presentation by Jenny MitchellJenny Mitchell won the Gregory O’Donoghue Prize 2023 for a single poem, and the Poetry Book Awards 2021 for her second collection, Map of a Plantation, which is on the syllabus at Manchester Metropolitan University. The best-selling, prize-winning debut collection, Her Lost Language, is One of 44 Poetry Books for 2019 (Poetry Wales), and her latest collection, Resurrection of a Black Man, contains three prize-winning poems and is featured on the US podcast Poetry Unbound. She’s won numerous competitions, is widely-published and has recently performed at the Houses of Parliament14:45 – 15:00 Comfort break 15:00 – 16:00 Session IV: Wellbeing Workshop by Writerz N Scribez 'Art is Powerful' Community WorkshopThe mission of W&S is to make arts accessible by removing barriers, reaching people where they are and providing opportunity to build community, develop skills and improve wellbeing. 16:00 - 16:15 Comfort break 16:15 – 16:45 Session V: Talk by Anjuli Kaul Improving motional safety, coping and resilience in researchers of violence and abuse: Findings from a qualitative studyIn her presentation Anjuli will share the findings of a qualitative study that her team conducted exploring experiences of secondary trauma and organisational support in researchers of violence and abuse. Speaker bios Síofra Peeren (she/her)Síofra is a survivor and post-doctoral researcher working on a project about pathways to support for trauma. She completed a BA and MA in Applied Psychology at University College Cork in Ireland before joining King’s College London in 2018 to begin her PhD. Prior to this, she worked on the National Rape Crisis Helpline, providing trauma-informed support to survivors of sexual violence.Her research focuses on improving health care responses to violence, trauma and abuse and completed an ESRC-funded PhD exploring perinatal care experiences among survivors of sexual violence in adulthood. Síofra is also passionate about using creative and artistic ways to conduct research and maximise research impact.

Dr Susanna Alyce (she/her)Susanna Alyce recently passed her doctorate at the University of Essex and is an educator in trauma-informed practice at the University for Clinical Psychology students, and for the charity Survivors’ Voices. Susanna’s other work is in teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and yoga. She is currently working towards her diploma as a Person-Centred Counsellor at The Norwich Centre. She is also a survivor of child sex abuse (CSA). She is a member of the Tavistock Network for Non-Recent CSA (https://sa18838.wixsite.com/nrcsa-network), and facilitates a peer support group for researchers for Survivors Voices. Jane ChevousJane Chevous is a survivor of child abuse, sexual exploitation as a teenager and rape/spiritual abuse as a young adult. She has fore-fronted participation and lived experience over 40 years work in youth work, social care, lifelong-learning and children's rights fields, and is a member of the Society of Education and Training (SET). She leads Survivors Voices, a survivor-led organisation which runs peer support network and turns the pain of abuse into power to change society’s response to trauma, through research, creative arts and education. She is a member of the Violence, Abuse &amp; Mental Health Network (VAMHN), associate researcher with King’s College London, a reviewer on the Research Ethics Committee of the Centre of Expertise on child sexual abuse and in the final year of her MSC in Mental Health, Social Inclusion &amp; Recovery with University of Hertfordshire. She represents survivors on the Church of England National Safeguarding Panel, and their Redress Scheme Working Group. A writer publishing on abuse and mental health, spirituality and sailing, she explores all these themes at Barefoot Tales. A community artist, she uses creative writing in all her work, supporting others through workshops and writers groups, and is currently working on her first poetry collection and a revised edition of her book about abuse, trauma and safeguarding.

Anjuli Kaul (she/her)Anjuli Kaul is a Research Assistant at The Section of Women’s Mental Health, King’s College London. She has previously worked as the Coordinator for the UKRI Violence, Abuse and Mental Health Network and as a researcher for the Modern Slavery Core Outcome Set (MS-COS) and Violence, Abuse and Mental Health South Asia (VAMHSA).
