EIT Climate-KIC Spark! Experience  - Earth Observation and Geographic Information: a crucial tool to monitor and tackle climate change

Floods, urban heat islands, pests and disease damaging crops and forest plantations… These trends are all the result of our rapidly changing climate and have repercussion on our livelihoods and health, the economy, our planet’s biodiversity etc. The urgency to understand, plan and mitigate these phenomena is well known and requires immediate action. Earth Observation and geographic information collected by satellites have become crucial in this context to provide live information and forecasts to different sectors such as forestry, agriculture, or urban development to name a few. Potential end-users for this information are also infinite as new use-cases are constantly being created to support civil servants, nature managers, farmers, NGOs, companies and the civil society in their activities.EIT Climate-KIC has partnered with the <a href="http://www.eo4geo.eu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">EO4GEO project </a>to design this event where you will learn more about the use and applications of satellite data in climate-change related challenges. The EO4GEO project is an Erasmus + project aiming to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of skills in the Earth Observation and Geographic Information sector through, among other actions, the provision of trainings materials and training actions to young graduates and professionals. During this event, stakeholders from the institutional, academic and private sector will give you the context on the sector and main ongoing initiatives. Dr. Escalona obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in telecommunications engineering from the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (UPC). He is co‐author of over 70 scientific articles among international conferences and journals in topics related to Future Internet architectures and services.</aside>Andreas Kazantzidis, Professor - <a href="https://www.upatras.gr/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">University of Patras</a><aside>Andreas Kazantzidis is the Head of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, Physics Department, University of Patras. Greece. His main research interests include the transfer of solar radiation through the atmosphere and the estimation of the effects of different atmospheric constituents, such aerosols and clouds. His experimental activities include measuring of solar broadband, ultraviolet and visible radiation using various types of instruments, monitoring of atmospheric parameters as well as data analysis, quality control and reliability of atmospheric measurements.</aside>Diego Saez-Gil, Co-founder - <a href="https://pachama.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pachama</a><aside>Diego Saez-Gil is the founder and CEO of Pachama, a Y Combinator-backed startup working to accelerate the flow of capital to carbon capturing projects starting with forests biomass projects. Pachama harnesses satellite images and machine learning to verify the carbon storage on forests and then connects directly project developers with carbon credits buyers in an open marketplace. Prior to Pachama, Diego co-founded Bluesmart, an IoT company that raised $20M in venture capital in Silicon Valley and China and was acquired by industry leader TravelPro. Diego also co-founded WeHostels, a pioneering online travel marketplace which was acquired by StudentUniverse. Diego was awarded with the MIT 35 Innovators under 35 and was selected as High-impact Entrepreneur by Endeavor Global.</aside>This activity has received funding from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
