About this event

  • 2 hours

Bécquer Seguín is Assistant Professor of Iberian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he teaches the literary, cultural, and political history of modern Spain.

He joins us at Secret Kingdoms to talk about “The Op-Ed Novel”, offering a new perspective on the politics of literature and the changing role of the novelist in public life.

His book tells the story of how Spanish novelists such as Antonio Muñoz Molina and Javier Marias, changed contemporary literature through their opinion columns. They saw their columns as extensions of their novels and their novels as column-writing by other means, using their stature to become stewards of their country’s cultural, economic, and political future. But they constantly troubled the fiction-nonfiction divide, using their novels to settle scores, make historical claims, and advance political projects.

The evening will take the form of an author interview, including readings and the chance to ask questions. This will be followed by book signing and drinks and snacks will be served. Whilst the event is free, places are limited. Please reserve and if you cannot make it, please unreserve.
