West Kirby - Red Rocks - Hilbre Island - West Kirby (approx 10km)

Welcome to Freshwalks.

We're excited to be back on Merseyside in 2024 for a series of walks delivered in collaboration with Haines Watts and Bathgate Business Finance.

Our latest route sees a return to the magical Hilbre Island.

Route description

Situated at the mouth of the Dee Estuary, the Hilbre Islands are one of the finest locations for walking in the region and spotting rare and endangered wildlife. The islands are an archipelago, and classed as one of just 43 unbridged tidal islands in the UK that can be reached on foot from the mainland.

Our route sees us initially head along the coast to Red Rocks before walking two miles across the Dee Estuary to discover this archipelago, consisting of three islands, straddling the England and Wales border. We’ll head from Little Eye past Middle Eye to Hilbre Island itself where subject to weather, we'll take some time to enjoy the surroundings and snacks/refreshments, we’ll begin our trek back to our starting point and a more direct angle towards West Kirby. It’s a fabulous route and a real hidden gem in the North West of England.

Schedule

We intend to start the walk from the beach at the bottom of Dee Lane slipway around 12:30.

Those wishing to arrive by public transport can take the 11:40 train from Liverpool Central to arrive at West Kirby 12:12 (5 mins walk from the walk start location).

Frequently asked questions

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please email hello@freshwalks.co.uk with any questions you may have.

What happens if there's bad weather?

Walks will only be cancelled in the most severe weather. A high risk of thunder and lightning would be one such situation. Ordinarily, a risk assessment will take place at least 48 hours before a walk. We’ll assess the potential increased danger and always seek to find an alternative route.

What if I need the toilet en-route?

The majority of our routes (longer walks in particular) don’t have any toilet facilities once we’ve commenced the walk. It’s absolutely 100% OK to go find a bush or some rocks when nature calls. And group discretion can always be facilitated whenever required if you need a few minutes - just ask.

Can I bring my dog?

Your canine friends are welcome on all of our walks unless explicitly stated so above. Most walks see a few dogs in attendance. We’d draw your attention to the Countryside Code and insist you keep your dog on a short lead when near any livestock. And please make sure you clean up any mess.

What is the refund or transfer policy?

For Rambles & Hikes, we offer full refunds for 7 days notice before a walk and a transfer to a similar walk anytime after that (upto 48 hours before). You can self-manage this via the Eventbrite platform.

What should I wear (clothing and footwear)?

Walking boots are recommended for maximum comfort and stability. In terms of clothing, keep one eye on the weather forecast and take a multiple layered approach to what you wear so you can increase and decrease warmth as required. Ideally a base layer, warmer mid-layer and waterproof outer shell.
