Three stages to messy play:

Stage one – general playThis involves giving the child opportunities to investigate materials that are hard and dry. This stageis comfortable for most childrenas many have experienced these textures around them already:

• dry rice • dry pasta; • beans • dried peas • pulses or lentils • sand • tinsel

Stage two – play using soft texturesThis is play that uses materials with a soft texture. Wet materials can be put into zip lock bags or covered with cling film to reduce the effect of the materials and make it easier for children who are sensitive to new textures to start handling them:

• cooked pasta • including spaghetti • bread dough • play dough • wet sand • squishy balls • soft materials

Stage three – messy play using soft and wet texturesThis is messy play that involves materials that are soft, wet and really messy. Children may take some time to work up to this stage. You may need to ease a child into these types of activities and be aware of them resisting or becoming sensitive towards certain textures. Always show your child that you are enjoying the experience of handling the materials even if this is difficult for you:

• paint • cornflour • water • shaving foam • baby lotion • wet mud

Benefits of Messy Play

Messy play is essential for early childhood development. With opportunities to explore different sensory materials, children discover new ways to express themselves and develop confidence in and control of their bodies. There is no “right way” with messy play. Studies show that the benefits for development lie in the open-ended nature of play, as children follow their own creative processes, practise new skills, solve problems, and share with others the wonder of exploring with their senses.

El juego desordenado es esencial para el desarrollo de la primera infancia. Con oportunidades para explorar diferentes materiales sensoriales, los niños descubren nuevas formas de expresarse y desarrollar la confianza y el control de sus cuerpos. No existe una "manera correcta" de jugar desordenado. Los estudios muestran que los beneficios para el desarrollo residen en la naturaleza abierta del juego, ya que los niños siguen sus propios procesos creativos, practican nuevas habilidades, resuelven problemas y comparten con otros la maravilla de explorar con sus sentidos.

BUGGYS- There are steps to enter so please avoid bringing pushchairs where possible.

CRAFTS- Please bring a bag to take home all your crafts.

CLOTHES- Please wear your old messy clothes! Although we use stain-free paint we cannot guarantee your fine whites will stay white. BABIES- sleepsuits work well to keep your babys skin clean, just to note sewn in feet may prevent those cute little footprints! TODDLERS- A puddle suit or onesie is great too.

CLEAN-UP- A towel, facecloth, baby wipes, spare clothes are all good things to bring along with you.

On entry staff will invite you in and hand sanitiser will be available on entry, feel free to use this through out the session.

**We have decided to reduce the workshop capacity in order to better respect social distancing. Our main priority is to keep you and my team safe so please don’t attend your booking if you have any Covid symptoms. One parent per child is recommended. If you’re unsure please don’t hesitate to contact me ahead of the workshop.

 Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Suitable for under 6’s  

What if my child has an allergy?

As most products are taste safe, please check with a member of staff before your child interacts with a play station.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Street parking is available, but very hard to find. Walking or public transport is advised where possible.

What can I bring into the event?

We have limited space for prams/pushchairs, so we would advise to carry/ walk with your child into the setting where we have the workshop.
