The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was founded in November 1859 and today serves more than 550,000 residents of Jefferson County, with a patrolling responsibility to 190,000 in the unincorporated areas of the 773 square miles of the county. As chief law enforcement officer of the county, the Sheriff oversees a full-service sheriff's office in Colorado with more than 500 state-certified deputies and almost 300 professional staff. Additionally, about 300 volunteers support Sheriff's operations.
